Teachings of Babaji: Saving the Entire Creation

The fact is, a great fire of sins and sorrows is burning throughout the world. Everyone living walks and works through this fire. People have become disheartened; Death is dancing before everyone's eyes; everyone has this experience.

Those who are present here, from whatever place they come, live here in unity, as one - and so must you live in your own country.

At present, not only humanity is in danger, but all sentient and insentient beings of the universe are in danger. I have not only to consider human beings but I have to save the entire Creation. How is this possible? (A long pause). It is quite impossible. Only he who has a strong determination to do good acts and who is strongly devoted to God can survive this destruction.

Whoever lives in whatever place or country, there is no necessity of your coming running here.
Please do not waste your time like this! The time and energy which you waste in coming and going to and from here should be used by doing sadhana (religious worship and work) in your home place. The coming and going is just a waste of time. Wherever you live, you must work hard to provide whatever your country lacks. Go on repeating God's Name and go on working, doing good deeds.

Only by Karma Yoga can you advance and be successful in your life. This is the only invincible weapon - like Vajra (the divine weapon of Indra, the King of Heaven). If you use this weapon, even during the time of total destruction you will not be moved or shaken. That is why you should never cease action.

You should not do anything which will do harm to others. You should do those good deeds which benefit the majority of the people. That is why all of you should advance by giving first priority to Karma (work). Karma is the only Yoga which brings success to a person. This Yoga is so powerful that even the least practice of it relieves a person from sorrow and sickness. Only that work which benefits the majority of people is truly called "Karma."
You must organize and unite people more and more wherever you live...

Teachings of Babaji: Maha Shakti Dhuni and Shri Shastriji

10 AUGUST 1983

In the name of Lord Rama, Rishi-Gautama came first to this place where the dhuni is now. This is why the river bears his name. Vasishta (the guru of Lord Rama - one of the seven rishis from the beginning of creation - and writer of many sacred scriptures) also came here. The Kailash you see before you is the main Kailash. Lord Rama also came here. Now, after thousands of years of creation, this place is in its most degenerated state. There was a time, when there were no hills, no earth here. But, in the name of Lord Rama, now there are both earth and hills. In the name of Lord Rama, even the sea was there. When Lord Rama came with Rishi Vishwamitra to visit Rishi Gautama's ashram, He drank from the spring by the dhuni now called 'Ram Dhara'. For the sake of Lord Rama, goddes Durga with eight arms also came here to bless Rama. This is the place of eight-armed Durga - this is why the dhuni has eight sides.

In the name of Lord Rama, here is sakshat Hari - Lord Vishnu in the name and form (here Babaji pointer to Shastriji). In the name of Lord Rama, he has written the epic of the Mahabharata three times. In the name of Lord Rama, it was he who was both Vashishta (Rama's Guru) and Vyas (writer of all the puranas at the time of Lord Krishna); he has also recomposed Valmiki's Ramayana three times. In the name of Lord Rama, he has been writer of many epics at many different times (epochs).

For the sake of Lord Rama, even Hanuman did not know his own greatness. In the name of Lord Rama, this is maya, the world illusion, the cause of creation. In the name of Lord Rama, it was he (Shastriji) who was Vashishta. In the name of Lord Rama, we are now in the twenty-eight Manvantara (one Manvantara has four yugas) of this kalpa (there are many thousands of manvantaras in one kalpa). As many as there were Manus (one of each Manvantara), there were Vyasas (writer of great epics and poetry).

You must not think that the creation was always like what you see now. There have been many total transformations. What once was here has been transported to a far away place. In the name of Lord Rama, seas have changed places and also mountains. In the name of Lord Rama, Shastriji has been a world teacher and poet at all times. He (Shastriji) attained self- realization through Kakbhushundi (a sage in the shape of a crow, living permanently on a hill top of Himalayas - a devotee of Lord Rama, who forever resides in the Ramayana). He is the original poet-saint of all times. For the sake of Lord Rama, Rama Krishna Shastri ( the Shastri from Ludhiana ) has also been with him at all times - it was he who was Vishvamitra.

In the name of Lord Rama, even Hanuman did not know his own powers and greatness.

You must all sing Bhajans (devotional songs), wherever you are. In your countries, you should assemble at least weekly for bhajans and kirtan (songs repeating God's names).

Bhajans should be sung like a flower gives nectar-sweetly and softly. Drums, chimtas and other instruments should be played quietly. Some bhajans are more appropriate for singing at different times of day. Listen and learn to make proper selections for the morning and evening.

Haidakhandi Fire Ceremony

Once the ceremony begins, each of the words said is a Name of God. The different aspects are each called upon with reverence and given an offering.

In another dimension, it is possible to see the named deity swoop in and take their offering as it is given to them. They are all lined up, waiting for their turn to partake. They, in turn, give of themselves: a blessing of assistance in life, a feeling of peace, an attitude of understanding or compassion.

More than 400 Names of God are recited during a typical fire ceremony. Those attending a Havan will receive most benefit by keeping a silent, prayerful and respectful attitude, observing each thought, each picture, each emotion that comes to mind and offering that into the fire.

With each offering is said "Swaha" (I offer). Swaha is also the name of the wife of the God of Fire, Agni. To honor his wife is to honor him in the highest way.

Teachings of Babaji: Living in Unity
31 AUGUST 1983

You must know that by living together in a united way, anything may be achieved in this world. People in this area must become united to progress. There is great power in union. If there is unity and love among you, then only can you lead a peaceful and happy life.

We must work unitedly. We must all work together to complete our task. In this way, all work becomes easy. Through division of opinions, great kingdoms and many city states were ruined in the past; but by living in unity, ruined kingdoms have received new life. On this auspicious day, everybody should take a vow to work together in this life.

Try to develop your villages. There is a Sanskrit proverb which says that in the Kali Yuga there is power only through organized groups. We must be of firm determination to progress. Then only success is certain. Modern man has even traveled in space; he has been to the moon and intends to visit other planets; but people in this area are where they were - they have made no progress. Now here we should make efforts to progress, as well. As in these modern times, science and technology have advanced, so we, too, should strive to advance in every way.

Teachings of Babaji: FEW RECOGNIZE HIM

Whenever the world faces grave problems, the Lord takes human incarnation and comes to fulfill the needs and desires of human kind. However, when the Lord comes in human form, few recognize Him. It was the same with Ram and Krishna, Christ and Mohammed. Only those to whom the Lord wishes to reveal Himself realize He is in fact more than just a normal human. He will put suspicion in our minds and hearts and it is our duty to pray to Him for the wisdom to know Him.

Without Babaji's blessing, one will only see His play at the human level, like that of Krishna with the gopis.

Lok Pal described the discipline of being with Babaji as the most difficult one could ever face, but went on to say that it is through facing this discipline with enthusiasm and openness that we will become pure enough to know Babaji and receive the love that He offers.

Teachings of Babaji: Universal Peace

24 MAY 1983

Our main aim is that there be universal peace. How can we obtain this peace? We can achieve this by eliminating all differences between caste and creed, by eliminating all inhumanity among us. There must be only one caste and one creed-humanity. Become human.

The only religion is humanity. There must be tolerance and forgiveness. It is our duty to set an example for this. Everyone must be human. Everyone must be courageous, facing the difficulties of life with bravery. Save yourselves and others from the adharma (lawlessness) of the world. Cowardly people are like dead people. I want to create a world of brave people who face life as it comes. We want to save the victims of atrocities and bring them out of their troubles. We want to bring peace not only to one country but to the whole world-our aim is universal peace.

All of you must take a vow to go from house to house, from place to place, and help the needy. You have to root out the inaction which is destroying man. Inaction and idleness are the chief obstacles to man's progress. If you learn right action, you can do anything. Action is mahayoga-the highest yoga. you should progress through action. The political leaders of all countries preach inaction through strikes. You should have nothing to do with this. Man is meant for action.

and the bath is on Jan. 15 (Sunday)

This is a very auspicious occasion, as it is traditionally the "Night of No Evil Spirits on the Earth. From Sunset on the evening of Jan. 13 to Sunrise on the 14th, all evil spirits leave the earth.

It is good to repeat the Name of God during that time or say prayers, as there is no obstruction to the Light. It is said that prayers have 1000 times more value when prayed at that time.

At 4 a.m. you take a sacred bath (pour water over your body or take a shower).

When in Haidakhan for this event, the tradition says that all the Gods and Goddesses come down from Mt. Kailash and dip in the river at 3 a.m. Then the 'regular people' take the bath at 4 a.m. benefitting from the Holy Vibration in the water.

You can add a Holy Vibration to your own tap water by repeating "Hara Ganga, Hara Ganga." while you pour the water over you.

But when human beings come into this world they forget their duty and fall under an attachment to Maya (the illusions of Creation, of the material world); they fall into 'me' and 'mine', and so they forget God.

Because of the lack of human spirit, every individual is in tension and fear. I want to relieve everyone from this state.

But in all these Ages, under the guise of bringing peace and happiness, only wars took place - like those in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. These wars only left millions of women and children in grief.

Now I want to bring happiness to every living being by reforming the hearts of all individuals. Only by this process can the dream of the sages who formed the mantra come true. For this purpose, the only path is Karma Yoga.

Only Karma Yoga can bring satisfaction and good fruits of action. With this, happiness will automatically come into the hearts of the people. Hence, all of you should work hard and follow the path of Karma Yoga.

Now these changes are here and will rapidly increase and there will be much destruction. This cannot be changed through technology. It is a bit too late. But there are some who will have an open mind. And to those who follow my message, you will survive this and you will go on to serve and create the wonderful changes that I also speak of.

Dr. Bob: And what can be wonderful after all of this destructive change you are predicting?

Babaji: After the Great Revolution, this world will enter a golden age. The environment will be in balance and mankind will have changed its ways by living on the higher path. There will be tremendous technology. It will take you to the stars in this galaxy and beyond to other galaxies. You will become a great race creating life throughout the universe.And you will meet up with sentient beings from other dimensions of space-time when your science breaks through the quantum backdrop, the ground of being from which everything comes, the HOLOFIELD.

Babaji: You are the eyes and ears of the Universe.You are the observers of creation and its myriad things. At the last day of this year and after the inspiring beautiful news via Karkhu from Shri Muniraj yesterday please put your attention, prayers and love to Shri Muniraj's loyal servant Ganga.

In her service to Shri Babaji and Shri Muniraj she has not taken care of her own health and has developed a serious condition.

After a month of intense treatment in a hospital in Moscow Ganga went to Italy yesterday and is now in hospital close to her family awaiting a liver transplant.

She is weak and in need of a divine miracle, please remember her in your puja's and prayers.

She has been doing a beautiful seva for over 20 years and is now in need of our love and attention.

The message of Karkhu last night is one of hope and Divine inspiration however.

Shri Babaji has warned us often of these times to come but also promised that HE will be with us and this is what this message shows.

Dear All,

Sri Munirajji continues to get stronger and regain his strength. He is smiling and telling stories about Babaji.

He claims he now has 2 pace makers , the one the Dr. put in and the one Babaji put in. When he was put under anesthesia for the operation he was out for 2 hours and said " no one knows where I went" he said that "Babaji sat with him in a room with one door and told Munirajji to open the door and with much effort Munirajji got up and opened the door and together they walked thru a long tunnel when they exited on the other side Babaji applied with his own hand a black substance on his upper chest in 3 lines like chandan, then applied yellow then all the colors of the rainbow, then Babaji added layers many layers of clothe... and when He was done said to Muniraji now I have given you your pace maker...... Munirajji woke up back in his hospital bed.......

I was not there durring the operation arriving 2 days later in the morning just before the stent was inserted. The Surgeon came to see Munirajji while I was there and opened his gown to see a lot of cotton taped to his chest... he asked who had done this?, as it looked messy like a child had done it. Immediately the surgeon removed all this plaster and underneath was the neat and small plaster he himself had applied after the original surgery....

I did not think anything about it at the time but later when Munirajji was telling me the story of Babaji appearing to him and preforming his own surgery and applying all the clothe when he was done, I remembered what I had witnessed.

Babaji is doing everything and can do anything........

I took the picture after asking Munirajji for permission to take one picture for all of us.... he is sending his love to all of you.... Here comes 2012.... Bhole Baba Ki jai!

Sri Munirajji was smiling and laughing this afternoon, stated his intention to go to Thailand as planed and gave supreme happiness to all the devotees and family members present thru his light hearted joy, never once thinking about himself.

He has had two operations, a new pacemaker, making him our beloved "bionic Guruji" and a stent and is looking forward to his future with all of us in serving Babaji.

Can not help but be awe struck by Babaji's amazing grace, bringing us all together as a family and wonder what He has in store for us? The world is chaotic and incomprehensible and we all from diverse cultures and back grounds, with different ideas and motivations, and yet we are All His Family.

Babaji taught us that happiness and Grace comes from service and devotion, from selflessness and from listening to the ever present voice in our own hearts. Are we listening? Please let's all listen........................................

Sri Munirajji has had the stent installed and all went well, he was smiling and saying at last now I can eat!

I spent time with Sri Munirajji this morning, he was calm and peaceful

his vital signs are better and he was inquiring about the news and asking about various devotees.

Everyone here is sending their love and appreciation to Babaji and all of you for your prayers and your love.

Sri Munirajji will be discharged in 2 days and rest with Dr. Chopra for a few days before deciding when to return to Haldwani. I will remain with Him.

This afternoon we have an appointment with the Dr. for a full update and I will send that along.

Dearest brothers and sisters,

I have just come back from the hospital and our beloved Guruji is looking fine though a little intoxicated by the medicines, but to my astonishment the moment I saw his radiant face, he inquired about my ailing mother, I was totally enveloped in his ever giving love, my heart goes out to him, how can he ever be so caring even in such distress.

It has been four days he has been in the hospitals of Haldwani and Delhi but there seems to be no exertion or any pain showing on his face, he is a fighter and a very determined one, he told me everything will be taken care by our Babaji, nothing to fear at all.

I would like to thank Brigadier Vijay Chopra for his endless efforts in coordinating with us and Guruji's family right from the time Munirajji was admitted in Haldwani and further airlifting him and getting him admitted into the best possible hospital of the country, his wife Dr Savita Chopra has been very helpful too in getting everything in perspective, she has been a phenomenal lady and shown us how to act in tough times.

Brigadier Vijay Chopra seems to have been sent by our Omnipresent Babaji to take all possible care of our spiritual master Sri Maha Munirajji Maharaj, I have personally watched him for the past 48 hours he has stayed with Guruji like a true Sevak, my heart goes out to him, I will always be indebted to him. I want to salute this great soldier of the Indian soil.

Today the International Festival of Christmas is ending. This festival was celebrated successfully, through the cooperation of all people. You have always been cooperating like this at this festival time. This festival is celebrated here regularly through the inspiration of all of you and it will continue like this in the future. That is my Blessing on all of you. Congratulations to you for your concentrated, wholehearted efforts.
I have told you many times before that you must all keep your duty before you always. We must all have one purpose before us - to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of humanity. We must live for humanity and die for humanity. We all must offer our lives for the welfare and security of society. This must be our main aim, our bhajan (meditation, kirtan and service). This is our bhajan, this is our kirtan, this is our repetition of The Name. We should always proceed with this aim in mind.
Today mankind has greatly degenerated. People are like puppets dancing for demonic leaders. We have to protect the people and lead them to progress. We must not lose courage...

As you heard just now, this was the celebration of the birth of Christ. All of you know about the resurrection of Christ and His message of Love. Every year we celebrate Christmas here - it is a very auspicious occasion. the teachings of Lord Christ was that we are all led by the Good Shepherd. Christ was crucified but he never died; He was resurrected and He had no word of condemnation or hatred toward those who killed Him. He prayed - "Please forgive them they know not what they do."
Now Shri Babaji is here before you. His teachings are similar to those of Christ. The message of Christ was to love everyone, to have no hatred or jealousy toward anyone. Babaji teaches the same. Everyone must do his own duty - only then can we advance.
I feel particularly honored by this opportunity to say a few words to you. I have a tremendous faith in Baba, particularly because we have His message of humanity here. So many foreign friends have come from all over the world. There is much difference between the ways of life and the religious beliefs but there is something unique here - that is why people come from all over the world and sit here.

This great gathering of humanity teaches us that though we come from all over the world, we are all from the same spring of humanity. We should love each other, we should gain experience of each other's views and exchange views of our faiths.
On this auspicious day, let us all pray to Lord Christ, to Baba, for blessing and for all the mental courage to perform our destined jobs honestly, properly and with dedication. Once again, I offer my prayers to Baba and to Lord Christ for all my brothers and sisters seated here...

The fact is, today is an auspicious and blissful day. Today you are all assembled in the foothills of the Himalayas and on the banks of the river Gautami Ganga. Today the air is cool, gentle and sweet-smelling. People from all countries throughout the world have come here. Those who have assembled in this holy place on this Day are enjoying the bliss of heaven. Let this Day be happy for all of us who have chosen the Path of Universal Unity.
The fact is, I have told you before, many times, what I want to do in the world. I want a creation of brave, fearless and courageous people. I want people with a strong revolutionary spirit who are willing to fight for the Truth. I want to root out the present spirit of non-violence from the world; this emphasis on non-violence has brought an increase in atrocities and injustice in the world. I do not want a world in which the rights of human beings are crushed/trampled, as the world is today. This practice of non-violence has led people into ignorance instead of leading them to knowledge. Due to this kind of non-violence, Man has been deprived of his rights and he is afraid of his own shadow. I want a creation of powerful people throughout the world.
You will all wonder what Shri Mahaprabhuji will do, how He will do it, what is going to happen, how He will face this calamity single-handed. Up to now, whatever one has achieved, he has achieved by self-effort. Yat atma dhrirh nisachyah. You must have perfect/full control over yourself and a firm determination. You must not be shaken from your determination, even at the time of total dissolution of the world. One who is firm in his determination can change the whole world.
When Lord Ram was in exile, He had no army of millions of men but He did have a firm determination. When one has firm determination, all the powers of Nature assist him, come to help him. When the Pandavas returned from their years in exile, no army waited for them. As in those times, all the powers of Nature will come automatically to help us when the need arises.
It is said, in Sanskrit verse, that if a King is brave and courageous, his subjects will help him with bravery and courage. If we have a firm determination, fire, water, storm . . . nothing can stop us. It will not be necessary to call; when the time comes, all the powers will come to help, like clouds coming piling in.
Today, in our society there is no lack of people who are trained in many arts and in the sciences. In the Samaj, there are people of such talents who come from all parts of the world. Here are many people with great knowledge of the arts and sciences. In this society, all are educated and each one who comes in more qualified than those before him.
At the time of the Mahabharata, the great, great kings, leaving behind the fear of death and the hope of life, jumped into the battle. Like that, today people from many countries are ready to face whatever comes. He who has doubts will perish.
You are all eyewitnesses. Did I go anywhere to broadcast My Message to any other country? The thing is - "Awake! Arise! Go to the learned people and get knowledge from them." Then you will get all kinds of powers and success in your life. Today I want to congratulate the people from all over the world. Those who are present and those who are not - all deserve congratulations on this Day...

How to perform Japa:

Usually, japa is performed on a mala (prayer beads, 108 beads per strand, like a rosary). In the morning, upon waking from sleep, a bath is taken immediately (pour water over all the body from a bucket with a cup). After bath and dressing in your prayer clothes, you sit peacefully in front of your altar.

You touch the mala only with the right hand. You hold the beads without using the index finger (index finger is known as the "ego" finger so you leave the ego out of this).

You begin where the mala has one larger bead and a tassle; you say one mantra per bead, working the mala around between thumb and middle finger. Once you have completed the 108 repetitions, you turn the mala around and go back the same direction you came.

The large bead at the end is called the "guru" bead, so you "don't cross the guru," you keep turning the mala around and going back over the beads the opposite direction.

Since 5 is a Shiva number, it is good to do a minimum of 5 rounds of the mala at a sitting. This is done morning and evening.

Japa Nam is also accomplished by constantly repeating the Name of God while working, eating, walking, and everything you do in a day, without always using the mala. When you repeat the Name of God while working, it is also called Karma Yoga.

Repeating God's Name

In order to focus one's mind on God, Babaji taught people to chant the ancient mantra Om Namah Shivaya. It is a Sanskrit phrase which means something like "I surrender to/bow to/take refuge in God," or "Lord, Thy will be done." The Name of God used in this mantra is Lord Shiva, the Supreme Manifestation of God. Constant repetition of the mantra (japa) focuses the mind on God-- opens the heart and mind to God-- and stops, or reduces, the tendency of one's mind to constantly plan (the future), worry (about the past), daydream (illusion), or otherwise idle away in essentially useless activity.

Repeating God's Name of Om Namah Shivaya is a protection and a purification of the consciousness. It is like a clear running stream, constantly washing and renewing the mind for higher purpose. Babaji's main purpose for re-appearing is to reform the hearts and minds of people. He comes to remove confusion and evil from mankind. Shri Babaji once said: "The mind can be purified only by japa. This is the only medicine for the disease of the mind. While your mind and heart are impure, how can God live in your heart? The water to clean your heart is the Name of God. Teach everyone to repeat the Name of God -- everywhere."

The mind that is generally focused on God's Name(s) responds, when the need arises, spontaneously to perform its required functions quickly, easily and well. Babaji emphasized Om Namah Shivaya but also gave other mantras on some occasions. The essence of his instruction is "Repeat God's Name." Shri Babaji said that when the great destruction comes to the world, those who believe in and worship God sincerely, and especially those who repeat His Name, will be saved by the power of the mantra. "God's Name is more powerful than a thousand atomic and hydrogen bombs."

The message to all of you is that the most important thing in the world is humanitarianism, or humanism. For this, we should sacrifice all our self-comfort. Do not think of yourself or your comfort, but think of others. This is the great humanitarian principle.

What does one mean by humanitarian rules and humanity? Babaji says one should not have any hatred towards anyone; one should try not to let other people down; one should try to help others; one should try to love all.

In this new kingdom, everyone should be good. Babaji expects all this from you. And you should try to share this with others--to those who are not here. Teach it to others; not only those around you, but in other countries, in the whole world--wherever you go, one should try to put it into practice.

Babaji likes human beings. Humanitarian work should be done by all of us. Babaji wishes humans well. A person who follows this and who always keeps humanitarian rules in mind will be loved by everyone and shall survive all this destruction and shall remain happy. One should try to bring these humanitarian ideas to everybody who does not have them.

This reminds me of a story. I heard this from a personal friend who visited Babaji in 1978. He was in the Gautami Ganga with Babaji and was asked to wash Babaji's back...while Babaji was mostly submerged in the water. As he did this, Babaji's body stretched out longer and longer, taking on the appearance of a very large snake.

This surprised my friend so much that he looked into Babaji's eyes and said, "Baba, you are not human!"

Babaji said (with a grin): "I never said I was."

In that instant, Babaji resumed his usual form and they proceeded to cross the river.

Hi Friends!

Isn't it all just kind of amazing how the universe works sometimes? (probably all the time, but sometimes it just HITS me!) My son, Nate, a sophomore in High School, created a project in Biology class with a woodhouse toad. He and his lab partner made up science lessons for third graders and then had to find a third grade class with whom to share the information. He chose the elementary school where I first began teaching in 1972 (THIRD GRADE!).

This morning, we had to leave home early and deliver the toad (named Ricky) to the classroom along with the worksheets and assignments for the students. I have not been in that school building since 1976, when I transferred to another Elementary School here in Lincoln.

We brought Ricky in, checked in at the office, and proceeded to the classroom. Lo and Behold! It was MY classroom of 39 years ago! (What are the chances?)

Everything looked smaller to me-- does that mean I am bigger? :)

It was one of those 'past-life regression' moments even though it is THIS lifetime.

I definitely have felt like I've lived at least 4 lifetimes in this one anyway, and this was a significant one!

I am still just kind of stunned by this experience, just thinking: "What is the mission here? What am I REALLY doing back in Lincoln, Nebraska?" I'm getting the picture that there is more to this than (so far) has met the eye!

After leaving Lincoln in 1980, it feels like a life review and a chance to re-connect with 'something.'
Since I am now to the point of asking the question, I am certain the answer is forthcoming.

Along this same line, here is some information that really struck me this past week. Chris Gillebeau shares a blog about travel and living your purpose and living fully---and his recent post has been very significant to me. The subject is "Your Legacy Project."

Babaji's "Miracles"
(excerpt from "The Legend of Hairakhan Baba" by Dio Urmilla Neff, in Yoga Journal, April 1980)

The closest I got to witnessing "miracles" was when Babaji appeared to read my mind -- an act considered very ordinary by ashram standards. I was told that I could petition him mentally, and he would sooner or later answer my request. And I found, to my amazement, that I only had to request some understanding of a concept or some insight into a problem, and the answer would come a few days later in some subtle way, by a flash of understanding or by someone else suddenly telling me the answer. This was often followed by some small physical manifestation as well.

I would know an answer or get a small realization, and suddenly I'd get a mango from Babaji. It seemed that every time I was on the right track mentally, I got an instant confirmation from him: a quick look, a raised-palm blessing, a gift of prasad. The more I saw of Babaji, the more wondrous he seemed. When he'd walk into the kitchen compound the place would suddenly come alive. The saried ladies would jump up from cleaning the rice and greet him. The youthful cook would emerge from his wooden hut, beaming, his bubbling vegetables temporarily forgotten. The kitchen workers would crowd Babaji, their faces lit with the radiant "He's here" look I came to know so well.

In June of 1970, so the story goes, a Herakhan farmer named Chandramani dreamed he should cross the Gautam Ganga and enter a cave at the foot of Mt. Kailash. He did, and once inside, found a beautiful youth sitting in a lotus pose [a yogic pose used in meditation with both legs crossed]. The youth was tall and slender, with dark, shoulder-length hair and a fair complexion. Chandramani went home and returned with some milk for the young man.

The farmer continued to bring milk each day and soon moved into the cave to better serve the youth, to whom he'd become very devoted. Shortly thereafter they climbed Mt. Kailash. On this holy mountain the youth sat in a perfectly still yogic posture for 45 days, neither eating nor drinking nor ever opening his eyes. Later, he and Chandramani crossed the river to the small octagonal temple built by Herakhan Baba decades before. They lived in a nearby hut, and one by one the awestruck villagers came to pay their respects to this remarkable young man, believing him to be their own Herakhan Baba,returned at last.

About a year after he appeared in the cave, the young guru began to travel to various villages and cities in Northern India. In this way many more people became aware of him, and soon there was a steady stream of city people hiking to the remote temple in the Kumaon Hills. An Indian friend from Bombay told me how she first met Babaji in those early days, and how he revealed himself to her. My friend is a rather westernized, no-nonsense sort of person who had first read Autobiography of a Yogi in 1959. She felt an intense yearning to find Babaji, and so set out for the Himalayas to find him. She didn't find him then, and so tried again in 1965 -- still without success. One evening in 1971, she was sitting with her father by their family altar which was covered with pictures of deities and saints.

A relative came to the door and insisted on bringing a young guru in to meet the family. My friend had given up on Babaji and on gurus in general by then, and didn't want to meet another one. But her father, ever hospitable, agreed to see him. The relative came in with a strikingly beautiful youth who walked straight over to the altar and sat down. Looking intensely at my friend, and not speaking, he pointed to a picture on the altar that, most oddly, she had not seen there a moment before -- the small line drawing of Babaji from Autobiography of a Yogi. Then he pointed to himself. Still silent, he pointed to the picture and to himself twice more.

Moved to tears, my friend fell at his feet. She'd found Babaji at last. This woman told me, as did other Indian devotees, what Babaji was like in the early years at Herakhan. In 1971 and 1972, they said, he would sit for hours in a lotus pose with his eyes closed, apparently in a deep meditative state. Even when not in meditation he hardly spoke, they said, and then only in monosyllables. His eyes seemed to radiate a light, and often his gaze was so bright and penetrating people couldn't look at him. Photographs of Babaji at this time show a slender, beautifully-featured youth of about twenty, with dark, arresting eyes and a mass of tangled hair. He looked in some photos like a Sioux warrior, and in others like a madonna.

THE INSTALLATION OF NEW CONSCIOUSNESS

The Lord has come to give us true knowledge, but to understand knowledge is beyond human capacity. The sins of thousands of years are destroyed when He has made us to do pranams to Him and when He gives His Holy Touch.

The moving of stones from one place to another is for your concentration and spiritual growth. When the insentient stones which are lying here become moved, Babaji installs in them a new consciousness. The stones are not lying here without purpose; they are also doing penance. By touching these stones, we receive a vibration of Higher Consciousness. We don't see anything outwardly, but this contact changes our body, mind and spirit.

He is the the Lord of the Universe. He enters into people's hearts and changes their thoughts. All changes taking place now are due to a simple motion of His finger. Whenever he goes, He puts a new consciousness in people and brings spiritual change. Otherwise, He has no need to go from place to place.

In the name of Lord Rama, PHURO! Be inspired! You all have to go forward. You can only progress through Karma - action. You all have to perform "Sat-Karmas - good, merciful, charitable actions." "Akarma" (inaction) is the worst thing in this world. If you want to live a true life, you have to be active and hardworking. You can become an emperor of this world by hard work. Victory is yours by hard work.

All you monkeys and bears! Lord Rama conquered Lanka with the help of hardworking monkeys. You monkeys! Only wagging your tails won't be enough! You will have to do something practical, something useful.

Babaji says you must work hard and put things into practice. Teach these things to others, too. First, be inspired yourselves; then inspire others with this message of Karma.
"Ishvarovacha" - Lord Ishwara (i.e. God) tells you: "PHURO! Be inspired!"

What you just heard were full, potent mantras.

Teachings of Babaji: Unity, Courage, Service

23 SEPTEMBER 1983

The world now is in a state of turmoil. It is suffering from three kinds of pain - physical, mental, spiritual - and there is only one way of being cured from these. We have to root out inhumanity and replace it with humanity. I have told you before that I do not want differences of caste, creed, color or race. When there is only one Humanity, how can there be different creeds and castes? This is quite unreal.

I think it was like this: some shrewd people invented all the differences in order to divide people, to be able to rule over them. So they created castes, their aim being to divide and rule. Differences were created for selfish motives. There are people in this world who, when they see someone else's house is burning, are happy. There are people who want to live in comfort at the expense of the labor of others. There is only one God, who created all men in His image. This is why we have to reestablish humanity.

What I want to instill in man is courage. I want to have a creation of courageous people. Only courageous people can come here. Only courageous people can survive such critical times. I have spoken to you many times about the extent of the calamities to come. They will be so terrible that people without courage will die instantly from heart failure. We have to have the courage to face floods, fire and storms. We have to go beyond the fear of death and the hope of life.

I want a creation where there is no dependency of any kind. Everyone should be able to stand on his/her own two feet. The problems of all countries can be solved when everyone becomes hard working. As long as there is laziness in the world, people cannot attain happiness. Today's world leaders have created circumstances which make it difficult even to breath. If you are active and hard working, then you can do everything yourselves. Materialism is rising like a great storm and we have to face it.

I have told you before that through Karma Yoga alone can you attain liberation. Any material desire you may have can be fulfilled by Karma Yoga, as well. Karma Yoga is Supreme Yoga. Lord Rama and Lord Krishna taught this, too. Not only did they teach it, they also practiced it and were successful in it.

At Herakhan, no one is restricted to only one kind of devotion or learning. All

have a right to their form of devotion to God. You, who have assembled here, are

able to experience the development afforded by this place. Not all who come

here are advantaged or rich, but all have been pulled by their hearts. As air

enters a vacuum to fill it, so too you have been pulled.

Those coming from the West have been saints in their former lives and were born in technologicallyadvanced cultures to fulfil Karmic desires, but are drawn to Shri Babaji when that karma is about to be satisfied.

Shri Babaji teaches us about the unity of creation.

We are all made from the five elements; we are all of one spirit. In all respects,

we are one humanity, one human family.

Limitations arise from political beliefs and world leaders who hold thinking to time, place and culture, thereby creating differences and separateness. The birthright of all mankind is to love and follow God.

Limitations arise from erroneous human beliefs. Shri Babaji has appeared

to illumine the minds and hearts of mankind, so that unity and harmony may be

known by all.
